Larry Price is rarity.
​
He is an alto saxophonist influenced by Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley, Roscoe Mitchell, Julius Hemphill, who brings all of the Free Jazz fire and intensity of the 1960s and 70s.
Yet, he contains it within a tempered vault of Blues and Gospel.

No matter how far "out" he goes, he is always tethered creatively and emotionally to the root and source of this music.
He is not a grad school experiment.
He is not a text book Jazz player.
He is a Soul Man, and when I say, Soul, I speak of the spiritual path that John Coltrane etched and so many in the 1960s and 70s followed.

Larry is reminiscent to me melodically of Johnny Hodges with a straight-ahead Art Pepper approach, but also infused with the soulfulness, albeit on alto, of a Hank Mobley. He is always swinging, never loses his melodic sense, and his ears give him an excellent sense of ensemble whether playing as a leader or a sideman. He is well worth a listen and if you have a chance to catch him alive, you should absolutely do so!
